Threatened by Canada at G8 Environment, Kyoto Protocol does appear in final declaration

Brussels, 15/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Banff (Canada) last weekend to prepare the World Summit of Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, end-August, September next), through a compromise formula, the G8 Environment and Commissioner Margot Wallstrom settled the differences of views opposing Canada, host country accused to putting into question ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by demanding it secure additional CO2 credits due to its exports of clean electricity, to the other partners - except the United States - which have undertaken to ratify the protocol in 2002 (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan Italy and Russia). Threatened with not being included in the final declaration, the Kyoto Protocol is there. The texts reiterates the commitment by all to meet the commitments made under the framework convention on climate change, but stipulates that: "for most countries, that means rapid entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, accompanied by many ratifications by the Earth Summit" and for the others "to take national measures that are energetic and realistic". Asked about the possibility of Canada not ratifying the protocol, the spokesperson for Margot Wallstrom declared to the press on Monday: "We hope that Canada will remain on board. Canadian Minister David Anderson assured that nothing had changed in his country's position. To reopen the chapters of the Kyoto Protocol would not be a good signal to send before the World Summit on Sustainable Development. We hope that Canada will find other paths to ratify the Protocol".
