Romano Prodi inaugurates "Green Week"

Brussels, 15/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the launching of Green Week on Monday 15 April (see EUROPE 11 April page 18), Romano Prodi focused his contribution on the important link between children, the environment and health. The President of the European Commission pointed out that in 10% of children's respiratory illnesses, atmospheric pollution is to blame. Mr Prodi stressed that there was a lot to be done in this field. He also mentioned the long-term dimension to the environment within the Earth Summit in Johannesburg next September. He emphasised that measures to take in the field of electricity and access to water demonstrate that around one human being out of five did not have access to drinking water and 2 billion people: : : did not have access to commercial fuels. In pointing out the different challenges facing the Union in this domain, such as climate change, Mr Prodi said that he intended going to Johannesburg and immediately called on other world leaders to go there too.
