Ms Ayuso Gonzalez report on regulation on ethyl alcohol sent to Parliamentary commission

Brussels, 11/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament decided on Thursday in Strasbourg to send the proposal for a regulation of the ethyl alcohol (derived from agricultural produce) market to a Parliamentary commission for examination. This decision was put forward by the rapporteur, Maria del Pilar Ayuso Gonzalez (EPP-DE, Spain), who indicated that the EP's request for information about the synthetic alcohol (industrially produced) in this proposal, presented some legal complications. Speaking for the European Commission, Viviane Redding explained that it was better to send the examination of this report off later in order to allow the EP to regulate the problem in discussions with Commissioner Franz Fischler. Pressure by certain delegates from the Agriculture Committee meant even proposed rejecting the Commission proposal, an extreme position, not shared by the rapporteur, who was more in favour of dialogue and compromise with the Commission and the Council. Ms Redding pointed out that the Commission could not support this report in which the EP called on the Commission to withdraw its proposal.
