Commission welcomes adoption of regulation on ".eu" Internet top-level domain

Brussels, 26/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission welcomed the adoption by Monday's Telecommunications Council of the regulation on the implementation of the .eu Internet Top-Level Domain (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.8). According to European Commissioner Erkki Liikanen, this will create a true European identity in cyberspace for Internet users in Europe, as Internet users may, for the very first time, be able to have pan-European domain names and e-mail addresses. The Commission recalls that its position has consistently been to ensure that the new ".eu" Top Level Domain is not burdened by an excessive regulatory framework, while still providing adequate safeguards for certain areas of public interest. It points out that, now especially, it is a matter of selecting the private, non-profit-making organisation that will mange the .eu Top Level Domain, and the definition of rules to safeguard certain public policy issues.
