22/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The reorganisation of Justice and Home Affairs issues at the Council is being pursued. The Council Secretariat has proposed that the European Commission Permanent Representative Committee approves the getting rid of a number of groups: CIREA, drug trafficking, (its activities will be taken up by other groups accordingly), data protection. Some groups will be kept, including two "anti-terrorist" groups in the second and third pillar categories, the Europol group (while awaiting the amendment to the Convention), police co-operation and customs co-operation etc. This proposal is one of the aspects of the reorganisation of Council JHA work groups, which has been on the table since the Swedish Presidency in the wake of much criticism levelled at how the work was organised.
