Brussels, 22/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - "Where has the Socialist family got to on the work of the Convention?". Giuliano Amato, Italian Socialist and Convention Vice-Chairman, explained in just a few words, when speaking to the press on Thursday evening, that German MEP Klaus Hänsch, Member of the Convention's Praesidium, is to draft a document intended to give greater detail about the aims of the PES for Union reform in order to prepare a "great seminar" to be held before the Convention's summer break. The seminar will be open to all European Socialists, and first of all to their Heads of State and Government, he said. (See EUROPE of 21 March, p.3, on the subject of a similar seminar organised by the EPP). The European Socialist Party will also form a certain number of working groups on the themes of the Convention. "It will then be necessary to reach a phase when increasingly concrete texts and proposals will be drafted". It is a matter of "launching the debate, seeking to reach common positions, but not, at this stage" to reach a common text for all European Socialists, said Giuliano Amato in response to questions. Although he admitted that the interventions were for now "still very general", he felt that they would allow the expectations of everyone to be better defined and to ensure that the EU's place on the international scene and subsidiarity were two of the most important issues for the Members of the Convention.
