Several Member states taken to Court

Brussels, 14/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Commission decided to take certain Member states to Court for non-compliance with Community provisions relating to the environment. Italy and Portugal are being challenged for not complying with the directive on impact studies of certain public and private projects. Ireland and France will receive reasoned opinions for the same reason. France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Austria and Italy will be taken to court for failing to transpose Community legislation relating to the quality of the air and air pollution. Reasoned opinions have also been sent to a certain number of these countries, as well as Ireland, Denmark, Greece and Finland for the same reasons. The Commission also decided to challenge France, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Spain and Luxembourg for not complying with directives on wild birds and habitats. In addition, it was decided to prosecute France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom for failing to transpose European legislation relating to protection against ionising rays.
