Strasbourg, 14/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - Green MEP (France), Alima Boumediene-Thiery has called on MEPs to meet up in Jerusalem on 9 May. In a press statement she stated that the Parliament could not continue to be the silent witness of the new escalation in violence in the Middle East, that is without precedent since the beginning of the Intifada. She said the feeble proposals of the Council and the Commission were unsatisfactory and which faded away faced with the all-powerful USA. She said that by signing agreements with Israel, the European Union had taken a certain responsibility, which it should meet and have respected. The assembly of MEPs will take place around "minimum and binding positions": the respect for international law with an end to settlements and occupation, the establishment of a Palestinian state next to the state of Israel in mutual respect for the legitimate rights and aspirations of the two peoples and the immediate end to the violence
