Brussels, 04/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - The High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, has hailed the establishment of the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Kosovo saying "I was very pleased by the good news coming from Pristina today. I would like to congratulate the Kosovo Albanian leaders for having mustered the political courage necessary to overcome their difficulties. Their much awaited decision is an important step forward in the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244". Mr Solana congratulated the President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, and the Prime Minister, Bajram Rexhepi and his government, looking forward "to the elected leaders continuing to demonstrate effectiveness and sense of responsibilities" and urging the Kosovo Executive to "concentrate on making the self-governing institutions work in accordance with the Constitutional Framework to address the challenges facing Kosovo today: economic development; beating crime and violence; and creating a fair and safe society for all of Kosovo's inhabitants". Mr Solana also thanked the UN Secretary General's Special Representative, Michael Steiner, for facilitating the "breakthrough".
