Socialist members of Constitutional Committee deplore choices made by PES Group Bureau

Brussels, 24/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - Unanimously re-elected as coordinator for the EP Committee on Constitutional Affairs, British Labour member Richard Corbett sent a letter on Tuesday, in his own name and on behalf of PES members of the Committee, to the Group President, Enrique Baron Crespo, in order to inform him of his vexation regarding the way in which the Bureau of the Socialist Group had designated the members and substitute members to make up the EP delegation to the Convention. In his letter, the MEP stressed that the Bureau proposed five of its own members and that only one of them has been a full member of the constitutional committee over the past two and a half years. "This contrasts with the EPP, which has sent four active members of our committee, and other groups whose members are drawn entirely from people who have been active on the committee", he noted. The latter also included their coordinator in their delegation which, continues Richard Corbett, "puts me in an unfavourable position vis-à-vis my opposite numbers". "It is as if I have been disavowed by the Group", he said. ""It will also not facilitate future work with my counterparts who will, unlike me, have participated in the Convention", he added.
