Solana to visit region at end of week

Brussels, 22/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Javier Solana, will be travelling to the Balkans region at the end of the week, starting with a meeting in Belgrade with the Presidents of Yugoslavia and Montenegro. Javier Solana will be "facilitating" the negotiations between Belgrade and Podgorica. Montenegro wants to move in the direction of an alliance of two independent states, while the Yugoslav and Serb leaders (supported by the European Union) want Montenegro to remain part of the Yugoslav Federation. Discussions in Skopje will focus on implementing the various constitutional agreements endorsed by Parliament. In Kosovo, Javier Solana will be reiterating the European Union's call for the speedy organisation of elections for the new Parliament to elect the region's President.
