Adoption of ten Urban programmes for cities in United Kingdom - 113.5 million euro for these ten cities

Brussels, 22/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has adopted ten Urban II programmes for the United Kingdom. These programmes are intended to support the rehabilitation and development of urban areas in difficulties until 2006

Belfast: 17.1 million euro, 10.6 million of which from the Community budget, 5.6 million from the British public authorities and 0.9 from the private sector. These funds will foremost benefit projects for the renewal of certain areas and training and employment.

Bristol: 22.4 million euro, 10.6 million of which from the European Union, the same from the public sector and 1.1 million from the private sector. Priorities are employment, improving life in general (security, entertainment…) and projects for the young.

Burnley: 22.87 million euro, 11.4 million of which from the EU and as much from the British authorities. The Urban initiative is intended to improve living conditions in general by developing the social fabric (associations, involving the population in crime prevention).

Clyde: 28.3 million euro, of which 12.9 from the EU and 15.4 from the British authorities. Training, the development of economic activities, actions for the underprivileged (training, access to jobs) will lie at the heart of the programme.

Derby: 27.8 million euro, 11.1 of which from the EU, 14.8 from the public and 1.9 from the private sector. Priorities of this programmes are employment, supporting small companies, improving living conditions and developing associations.

Halifax: 36 million euro, of which 12.6 million from both the EU and the public and 10.7 million from the private sector. This programme is centred on supporting the local population: jobs, training…

East Durham Coalfield: 24.8 million euro, 11.4 million of which from the EU, 12.9 from the British public authorities and 0.5 from the private sector. Local life, involving the young in local life and economic activities should be supported by the programme.

Peterborough: 22.3 million euro, 11.1 of which from the EU, as much from the public and 0.4 from the private sector. Priorities are developing services, and backing economic activities.

Stockwell: 19.96 million euro, funded equally by the Community budget and British authorities. Training¸ the development of economic activities, environmental protection and the integration of underprivileged people (especially into work) are as many activities that may be supported by the programme.

Thames Gateway 29.2 million euro, 11.8 million of which from the EU, 15.5 million from the public sector and 1.9 from the private sector. This programme is focused on training, improving the economic environment, and integrating underprivileged people into the world of work.

At the end of last year, the Commission completed the adoption of 70 Urban programmes for the period 2000-2006. This initiative has as goal to support "urban regeneration" projects.
