ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) oil

France's TOTALFINAELF is planning to launch a bid for US competitor CONOCO to prevent it merging with PHILLIPS PETROLEUM, according to a report in the Sunday Telegraph. The merger was announced in November 2001 in a $35 bn deal, which has not yet been approved by shareholders (see IE of 21 November).
