Brussels, 14/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has approved ten Urban II urban regeneration programmes for Spain for the 2000-2006 period with total funding of EUR 180 million, EUR 110 of which will be provided from the Community budget and EUR 70 million by the Spanish authorities. The programmes will focus on regenerating urban areas, pacts for employment, inclusion of disadvantaged groups in the labour market, improvements to the urban environment (recycling and water treatment and management), and the promotion of access to the use of new technology.
The programmes focus on the cities of Teruel (EUR 21 million, half of which from the EU); Sant Adrià des Besos (EUR 24.6 million, half from the EU); San Sebastian-Pasajes (EUR 21 million, half from the EU); San Cristobal de la Laguna (EUR 15.2 million, EUR 11.4 million from the EU); Pamplona (EUR 22.8 million, EUR 11.4 million from the EU); Orense (EUR 13 million, EUR 9.8 million from the EU); Jaen (EUR 16.4 million, EU 12.3 million from the EU); Granada (EUR 16.4 million, EUR 12.3 million from the EU); Gijon (EUR 14 million, EUR 10.5 million from the EU) and Caceres (EUR 15.2 million, EUR 11.4 million from the EU).
Urban II supports urban regeneration in 70 European Union cities from 2000 to 2006. The EU will be providing EUR 728 million in funding and this will be supplemented by a similar amount of funding from the private sector and local and national public authorities of the countries concerned.
