Fiori Report to be discussed in plenary on 28 November

Strasbourg, 12/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - By 160 to 126 with 3 abstentions, the European Parliament finally decided to discuss the Fiori report on human genetics at its 28/29 November session in Brussels, although the Conference of Presidents had proposed it be dealt with in this week's plenary session in Strasbourg (see EUROPE of 10 November, p.9). Speaking on behalf of the Liberal Group, Astrid Thors had requested, with the support of Socialist Group President Enrique Baron, that the report by the temporary committee on human genetics be discussed and voted in Brussels, as initially planned, because it was only available in four languages. Under these conditions, "citizens cannot follow such an important debate", she commented. President of the EPP-ED Group, Hans-Gert Pöttering, urged for the Fiori Report to be kept on the agenda of next week's plenary, to make a link with the Caudron Report on the 6th Programme for Research and Development. Research in human genetics poses ethical problems on which a stance should be taken before all else, he declared, summarising his group's position.
