Strasbourg, 12/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - Lithuania has taken over from Lichtenstein at the presidency of the Council of Europe. Presenting the priorities of its presidency, on 8 November, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Antanas Valionis, insisted on stepping up the fight against terrorism. Emphasis will also be placed on enlargement of the Council of Europe as well as on the development of dialogue and complementarity with other organisations such as the European Union, the OSCE and the UN. Lithuania will also organise several meetings in Vilnius: - national minorities (April 2002); - the role and function of mediators in democratic countries (2002); - police ethics (March 2002); - and crossborder cooperation given the enlargement of the European Union (21 and 22 November 2001).
