12/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - For British Liberal-Democrat Chris Huhne MEP, the proposal for asking the EU's Committee on Constitutional Affairs for its opinion over the legislative arrangements provided for in the Lamfalussy Report on the single market for financial services is "a set back as we had hoped to move quickly (….), but it is not fatal". According to him, the Constitutional Affairs Committee should be able to "produce a quick opinion that the European Parliament's rights are not undermined by the Lamfalussy procedures"; which "would allow us to proceed with the market abuse and prospectuses directives on schedule to complete their first readings in February". Mr. Huhne says he is convinced that when it examines these procedures the Constitutional Affairs Committee "will see that the Parliament's negotiating strength in the forthcoming treaty revision has been reinforced".
