Parliament amends proposal of regulation on statistics

Strasbourg, 29/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Rosa Miguélez Ramos (PES, Spain) on regional statistics, the European Parliament amended the proposal of regulation aimed at setting in place a common nomenclatura of territorial units for statistics (NUTS). The Parliament shares the objectives set out in the proposal, but considers that the nomenclatura proposed by the European Commission appears as an artificial section of the European territory. It mainly calls for "at least three levels" of detail to be provided in the European regional nomenclatura (while the Commission calls for "three levels"), greater account to be taken of the socio-economic, geographical and environmental factors, and for the addition of certain Finnish administrative units that are missing from the list annexed to the regulation. These regional statistics are important as they allow the areas eligible for the Structural Funds and State aid to be determined.
