Spain and Sweden propose action plan for dialogue between different cultures in context of Barcelona Process

Luxembourg, 29/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh and her Spanish counterpart Josep Piqué seized the opportunity provided by the General Affairs Council on Monday in Luxembourg to present their colleagues with the action plan for dialogue between cultures and civilisations. They intend to propose this plan at the meeting of 27 Foreign Ministers under the Barcelona Process, in Brussels on 5 and 6 November (see other article on the Agadir meeting). The initiative arises from the invitation by the informal European Council in Ghent on 19 October to give priority to dialogue between cultures, mainly in the context of the Euro-Mediterranean process. The action plan should comprise a series of concrete activities in the fields of youth, education and the media, say the two ministers. They mainly cite: - review of the financing rules under the Euromed-Youth programme; - the creation of Euro-Mediterranean exchange programmes for young people and students; - the creation of networks between schools at every level; - the adjustment of university curricula to the demands of the market and the exchange of teaching staff within the framework of inter-university cooperation programmes; - revision of school books with a view to including all religions and the history of ideas; - and the promotion of closer contacts between journalists. The development of such an action plan could begin early next year so that it may be adopted by the Foreign Ministers during their meeting on 18-19 April 2002 in Valencia.
