MEPs divided over reopening of Mont Blanc Tunnel but support measures announced by Commission following Gothard Tunnel accident

Strasbourg, 25/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Addressing the European Parliament plenary session on behalf of the Commission, Commissioner Franz Fischler said that following the fire in the Franco-Italian Mont Blanc Tunnel in March 1999 and the Tauern Tunnel in Austria in May 1999, the question of tunnel safety had again been posed in the most brutal fashion by the tragic accident in the Gothard Tunnel in Switzerland on Wednesday morning.
