Brussels, 25/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Following the accident in the St Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland, the International Road Transport Union (IRU), calls on Austria, France and Italy to "take immediate measures" to abolish all unnecessary restrictions to the passage of road traffic over the Brenner Pass and the Frejus Tunnel. In a press release, IRU President David C. Green, stresses that, in the long-run, the accident demonstrates the need to impose separate "tubes" everywhere in tunnels, which St. Gotthard did not have. "This accident underlines that the only acceptable standard for major road tunnels is two separate tubes, which reduces the risk of an accident happening, helps limit casualties and damage if an accident does occur, and greatly facilitates the task of the emergency services (….). We need no more proof that the price is worth paying", declared David Green.
