Brussels, 26/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced that it will be granting a EUR 38 million loan for modernising the infrastructure of Leipzig Zoo in Germany. The shelters and enclosures have become obsolete and will be replaced with new structures providing similar conditions for the animals as they would enjoy in their natural habitat. The attraction of this "Zoo of the future" will be enhanced by creating geographical theme zones and the opportunity to follow an ecological training course or get involved in scientific activities. The project also involves funding restaurants, a new training centre and new operational equipment and materials. The EIB loan covers half of the cost of the project with the remainder coming from other banks, the City of Leipzig and the Zoo itself.
