Brussels, 26/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - To tackle the inflow of Afghan refuges in Afghan's neighbouring countries, the Commission College decided on Wednesday to ask the budgetary authorities to release an additional 25 million euro, to be taken from the reserve of the Community budget. If Parliament and the Council agree (a Commission/Parliament/Council meeting is scheduled for 15 October), this funding would come on top of the 4 million the Commission has already to send immediately through Echo under emergency humanitarian aid (see EUROPE of 26 September, p. 4) and the 23.5 million already paid since the beginning of the year for humanitarian programmes in Afghanistan. A UN spokesperson in Islamabad estimated at 7.5 million the number of Afghanis needing humanitarian assistance.
