Regional Conference in Bucharest on 25 and 26 October

Brussels, 26/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Balkan countries and the main donors (countries and international organisations) are meeting in Bucharest on 25 and 26 October for a Regional Conference aimed at discussing the political and economic support of the international community. The Stability Pact for South East Europe, the European Commission, the World Bank and Romania are jointly organising this Conference. It is not a donor conference like the one that gathered 2.4 billion euro in pledges in March 2000 for all the projects in the region. The Conference will especially serve to present a series of new projects, the funding of which has already (or mostly) been found, the organisers explain. The Conference also has as goal to encourage the private sector, through the Stability Pact, to further invest in the region. The organisation of meetings to facilitate contacts, and the development of private and public partnerships could be one of the ways, the spokesperson for the Stability Pact explains. The Pact's Co-ordinator, Bodo Hombach was in Bucharest to work on the organisation o the Conference, meeting politicians as well as the Business Advisory Council of the Stability Pact.
