18/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Before Wednesday's afternoon plenary session when MEPs will be debating her report on female genital mutilation, Spanish Socialist Elena Valenciano Martinez-Orozco will be holding a press conference at 11.00 hrs, with her colleague Emma Bonino (Italian Radical), Tanzania's Vice-Minister for Social Affairs, Shamin Khan, OAU diplomat Chantal Compaoré and Morissanda Louyaté, coordinator of the Interafrican Committee against Traditional Practices. The rapporteur says that even though sexual mutilation is a traditional practice in some of the countries of origin of immigrants to the EU, that never justifies failing to prevent, investigate and punish such practices.
