Safety and security on the agenda of the Barcelona Conference

Brussels, 18/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Directorate General of the European Commission responsible for energy and transport is to hold its first annual conference on energy and transport at the World Trade Centre in Barcelona, on 18 and 19 October.

This first conference will cover the themes of safety and security. It will bring together the main decision-makers from the public and private sectors, and essentially aim to diffuse the results of European research and technology programmes, while presenting the most recent legislative and regulatory initiatives. It will open with a plenary session during which speakers will present their vision of the main challenges that Europe faces today regarding transport safety and energy supply security. A round table discussion will follow and a day's workshop devoted to the following themes: safer energy: effective use and renewable sources; - safer and cleaner energy supplies; - nuclear energy safety guarantees; - safer roads; - prevention as a guarantee of transport safety; - another vision of security: intelligent systems. The Commission hopes that the discussions will allow more consensual positions to be reached in the future.
