Report on the risk of job losses in forestry industry further to impact of globalisation

Brussels, 18/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - In its latest report entitled "Globalisation and sustainable development of forests and wood industries: a changing sector", the International Labour Office (ILO) considers that millions of jobs could be lost throughout the world in these sectors, which covers the paper and furniture industry. In the world, nearly 47 million people work directly in forestry and the wood industry and "unless we manage to raise the challenges posed by globalisation and support these two sectors, job losses will be over 5%", states the ILO report. The factors threatening jobs in this branch mainly include restrictions on felling, the effects of mergers and acquisitions, and the lack of resources in the forestry and wood industries (furniture, paper).
