Brussels, 18/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Expressing its solidarity with the American people for the "horrific and cowardly attack of which it has been victim", the Union of European Federalists (UEF), chaired by MEP Jo Leinen (German Social Democrat), says that the "situations of tension, misery and anarchy which nourish the current widespread aversion against the US cannot be met exclusively by military means". The European Federalists are calling for a "multilateral policy capable to ensuring world-wide governance, based on peace and aiming for the economic development and the promotion of equitable and progressive political solutions in the poorest and most unstable regions of the world". In their press release, the European Federalists ask the EU Member States to "unite into a democratic Federation capable of putting an efficient foreign policy into action, in order to defend and promote world-wide the values of freedom, democracy, social justice and tolerance, and to guarantee Europe's home and foreign policy".
