12/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly's Monitoring Committee has found that Georgia does not come close to fulfilling the commitments it made when it jointed the Council of Europe in 1999. Adopting the report by Lino Diana (EPP, Italy) and Matyas Eörsi (Hungarian conservative), the Committee stressed that little progress had been made in terms of respecting human rights and expressed concern at the allegations of the ill-treatment and torture of prisoners and acts of violence committed by Orthodox extremists against religious minorities. The Monitoring Committee welcomed that fact that the region of Adjarie had been made autonomous, but was disappointed at the lack of progress in settling the conflicts in Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia. The report will now be examined by the Assembly at its 24/28 September plenary session in Strasbourg. Eight of the 43 Council of Europe Member States are currently being monitored.
