Brussels, 27/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to grant humanitarian aid of EUR 2 million to Tajikistan. The aid, that will go through the humanitarian office ECHO and the NGOs present on the ground, aims to prevent a further food crisis in this country. It should allow the funding of rehabilitation of existing irrigation systems and the construction of new systems for agriculture, and fund the supply of seeds and fertilisers to irrigated land. This emergency aid comes in addition to the ten million in humanitarian aid already made available by the Commission in 2001 for the provision of food, health care and water in Tajikistan.
