Brussels, 27/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Italian Competition Authority announced on Friday that it was not going to reopen the matter of Montedison's acquisition by Italenergia, which groups the interests of Fiat and EDF. The operation is thus a "European scale merger". We recall that, after a dual takeover bid concluded on Tuesday, Fiat and its French ally EDF acquired, through the intermediary of Italenergia, 96.9% of the capital of the Montedison industrial holding and 95.7% of the capital of its subsidiary Edison. The Italian competition authority had planned not to request referral of this dossier, and so the European Commission should request, on Tuesday, clearance of the merger or ask for an inquiry to be opened to verify that this operation does not entail the strengthening of a dominant position.
