Go-ahead to joint venture between HHLA and Hapag-Lloyd for operation of new container terminal in port of Hamburg

Brussels, 23/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Commission authorised the creation of a joint undertaking between Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus- Aktiengesellschaft (HHLA) and Hapag-Lloyd AG (Hapag-Lloyd). HHLA is active in the traffic management sector of the maritime ports and operates, among others, three container terminals in the port of Hamburg. Hapag-Lloyd is mainly present in the field of shipping line traffic and in passenger traffic. The joint venture HHLA CTA is expected to operate the container terminal in Altenwerder, from end 2001, once its construction in Hamburg has been finished. The market position of the notifying parties is such that the project will neither create nor strengthen a dominant position, even if the vertical aspects of the operation are taken into account.
