GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/languages

16/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - Mr Copetti, Secretary General of the Avanti Europa Movement, presented a petition proposing that, at the initiative of the EU institutions, and above all of the European Parliament (which "suffers the most" from language difficulties), a permanent conference on the problem of languages in Europe should be established. The petition, although not mentioning English, points out the multiplication of calls "denouncing the risk of gradual marginalisation of our languages to the advantage of a dominant language", and proposes that this conference, composed of representatives from the EU institutions, the Member States, linguists and specialists and representatives of "organisations for the construction of Europe", should be held each year in the same town at the same time to propose "non illusory" solutions to this problem. (To be returned before 1 September to: gianfranco.copetti@pandora.be, or http: //users.pandora.be/avantieuropa).
