Brussels, 16/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of Anna Diamantopoulou and Pascal Lamy, the Commission should adopt a communication on 18 April proposing a European strategy aimed at promoting minimum labour standards and social governance. This communication proposes action at European and international level using different policy instruments, so as to support implementation of non-binding minimum labour standards at world level. The "development" dimension is central to this strategy that stresses the need to help developing countries implement minimum labour standards. EUROPE will return to this.
