Brussels, 04/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - In principal it is next 18 July that the Commission will finalise the strategy aiming to counter the unfair competition by Seoul on the shipyards market. Before then, the Council will be called upon - probably during the General Affairs session on 16 and 17 July - to give the "green light" needed for the recreation of a temporary support mechanism for certain segments of the Community industry (at this stage, container ships, chemical products carriers and chemical tanker ships) for which a serious prejudice can be proven resulting from the South Korean practices. At the same time, the Commission should give the go ahead to the multilateral dispute settlement procedure. Officially, the Community move follows its course, for as much as the Korean leaders have still not returned to the negotiating table at the start of this week, following the short reprieve, which had been granted to them (see EUROPE of 28 and 29 June, pages 10 and 8 and of 9 May, p.10). Nevertheless, a last minute friendly agreement is not to be dismissed.
