Brussels, 04/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission approved the Dutch aid scheme for cutting CO2 emissions in road, rail and inland waterway transport as part of the measures introduced by the Dutch authorities to meet EU objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with Kyoto commitments. The Commission is of the opinion that the Dutch aid scheme's proposed objectives and maximum intervention thresholds are fully compatible with Community rules governing state aid for environmental protection and training. The draft regulation from the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Public Works provided for non-refundable grants for investment, information, consultancy, training and demonstration projects to cut CO2 emissions in transport. The aid scheme has a budget of EUR 36 million and should remain in force until the end of 2007.
