Luxembourg, 02/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Transport Council, Björn Rosengreen, Commissioner Loyola de Palacio and the Romanian Transport Minister, Miron Tudor Mitrea, signed a Transit Agreement between the EU and Romania on Thursday against the background of the Transport Committee. The Agreement will come into force in 2002 and should solve transit problems between Greece and the rest of the European continent. The Agreement covers exchanges of transit permits, a system of tolls for using infrastructure, legislative harmonisation and promoting combined transport. Romania current receives 7,000 return journey transit permits each year, and the EU 14,000, 90% of which are used by Greek lorry drivers. Similar agreements have already been signed with Bulgaria and Hungary.
