Prodi speaks of sound transatlantic partnership

Gothenburg, 15/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - At the end of the EU/United States Summit in Gothenburg on Thursday, the president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, declared that "this summit with President George W. Bush shows how strong our partnership is". While recognising that there are a large number of differences between both partners, he stressed that "when it is a question of guaranteeing peace in the world, prosperity and environmental protection, much depends on Europe and America working together". He went on to insist on the next multilateral trade negotiations, climate change, access to medicines in southern countries, the situation in the Balkans and the Middle East, and the Kyoto Protocol ("We shall pursue this dialogue at a high level by showing flexibility in seeking solutions in response to the concerns of the United States. But the binding aims and timetables cannot be altered", said Mr Prodi).
