Commission provisionally bans exports of pork from Catalonia in Spain

Brussels, 15/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Following the favourable opinion issued by the Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC), the Commission decided on Friday to provisionally ban all exports of live pigs as well as pig sperm, ovules and embryos from Catalonia (Spain), where recently a case of classical swine fever has appeared. The Commission's decision will be implemented from this Friday until 30 June. The SVC will meet next Friday to see whether it is necessary to prolong or relax these measures. According to information provided by the Spanish authorities, which have taken the required precautionary measures (troop culling, establishment of a 3 km protection zone and monitoring 10 km around the outbreak, tracing the movement of animals and vehicles), no pig has been exported since 14 May 2001, date when the disease was discovered.
