Brussels, 15/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Preparing for the Belgian Presidency of the Union, the French-speaking Green Party Ecolo and Dutch Agalev presented Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt with their demands on asylum and immigration on Wednesday 13 June. Wanting "better regulation for migratory flows in a European framework, the Greens call for: - the creation of a status assimilated to refugee based on Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Convention on Torture; - an extension of family reunification, that should be able to effectively concern categories outside marriage, as well as overage children living with their parents and grandparents; - the creation of a temporary status for displaced persons; - a relaxation of approval conditions regarding immigration for professional reasons. For the Greens, any approval of long-term stay must go hand in hand with an equivalent authorization to work; in addition immigration for vocational reasons should be facilitated on the basis of strictly defined and limited sectoral requirements in close collaboration with the social partners.
