11/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Speaking shortly after having his mandate as Chancellor renewed, Gordon Brown warned that there would be no speeding up in the process of his country's joining the Euro. According to the Sunday Times, he has encouraged the new Foreign Office Minister, Jack Straw, to adopt a "more pragmatic and less ideological approach" than his predecessor, Robin Cook. According to sources from the Foreign Office, the British Treasury assessment of preparations of the United Kingdom's economy for joining the Euro - the five criteria set out by Gordon Brown - are still a long way from being achieved. The Observer notes that Robin Cook was pushed out because of his Europhile sympathies and fears expressed by Tony Blair of an all-out war between Mr Brown and Mr Cook. Robin Cook (leader of the Party of European Socialists) has become Labour Party leader in the Commons, after being charge of British foreign relations over the last four years. Another partisan of the Euro, the former Minister for Trade and Industry, Stephen Byers, has been demoted to the Transport Department.
