Brussels, 11/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - "Speaking of the obligation to inform and consult workers in all European companies", the Council gave an important signal to workers who expressed concern about the "summary and frankly unacceptable" behaviour of company management in the event of closure and industrial restructuring, said Emilio Gabaglio, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation. He was commenting on the results of the Social Affairs Council on Monday (see above). Mr Gabaglio paid tribute to the Swedish Presidency for its "determination" in this matter and stressed the mobilisation and the trade union pressure organised by ETUC in the face of opposition from European employers and the reticence of some governments to recognise, in European legislation, that information and consultation are fundamental rights of workers.
