11/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - Following the drought hitting Afghanistan, where 500,000 displaced people have been counted, and more than one million are confronted to food shortages and a serious risk of epidemics, the Commission approved, on Monday, a humanitarian aid programme of EUR 13 million (food safety; nutritional aid and emergency aid to displaced persons; access to primary health care; provision of orthopaedic prosthesis; improvement of living conditions and street children; mine clearance operations (freight air transport and of humanitarian personnel). Between 1995 and 2000, the Commission granted EUR 104 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
