Brussels, 07/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided to end the action engaged against Belgium in the case of foodstuffs contaminated with dioxins. Thus Belgium will not be brought before the Court of Justice of the Communities.
The Commission had initiated a procedure for the late notification by Belgium of elements susceptible of constituting a serious danger according to the 1989 and 1990 Directives on the veterinary and zootechnical checks applicable in intracommunity trade. These services contacted the Belgian authorities to ensure that all the measures have been taken for such an infringement not to reoccur and, in particular, that the necessary instructions have been given to the competent administrations for the Community obligations to be fully applied. The shelving of the failure procedure for violation of the Directive, mentioned above, remains without impact on other actions, which could have or may be initiated.
