Brussels, 06/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Commission decided to send a reasoned opinion to the German Government for having only partially implemented the June 1998 directive aimed at ensuring the liberalization of the gas sector in the EU. It is on 10 August of last year that Member States were to have implemented the text. The current German legislation, adopted before the directive, certainly responds to certain demands of the latter. Germany has informed the Commission that a bill intended to complete implementation of the directive had been adopted by the Government on 20 December 2000, but the bill is still before parliament, which is what is making the Commission pursue its action. You may recall that, on 8 May, the Commission decided to take France to the Court of Justice for not having complied with its obligations relating to the implementation of the directive on gas liberalization.
