Montedison sends "communication" to Commission

Brussels, 05/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The spokesperson for Commissioner Monti, Amelia Torres, confirmed that the competition services had received a "communication" from the Italian Montedison group over the entry of the French EDF into its capital. Last week, Montedison had indicated that it was considering sending a "communication" to the competition services and those for energy, according to which the entry of the French State owned group into Montedison stems from an "abuse of dominant position". Amelia Torres indicated that the Commission would investigate whether Montedison request is receivable and whether there is cause to open a formal investigation as it has just done for the acquisition of 60% in the Spanish electricity group Hidrocantabrico by the German EnBW, in which EDF holds a significant stake (see EUROPE of 2 June, p.12). The entry by EDF into the capital of Montedison unleashes passions in Italy, where they feel that EDF it trying to take advantage of the energy market in Europe, while protecting its own market. (See among others EUROPE of 23 May, p.8 and 1 June, p.15).
