Goebbels sends out warning to Bolkestein

Brussels, 17/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, Luxembourg Socialist Robert Goebbels sent out a warning to Commissioner Frits Bolkestein, responsible for the Internal Market, in response to the latter's rejection of the proposal of adopting market regulatory directives guaranteeing the European Parliament the right to be heard. Mr. Goebbels declared at the end of a "conciliation" meeting in Strasbourg that "Commissioner Bolkestein is playing a dangerous game choosing to ignore the constructive proposals of the European Parliament in favour of the rapid adoption of financial market regulatory directives". He spoke of "a risk of total deadlock, if the EP is not guaranteed the right to be heard, as it is the guarantor of democratic control". Mr. Goebbels highlighted the interest of the financial industry and consumers, and added that "if the Commission continues to stick to a legalist attitude (nothing but the Treaty) Parliament would also be forced to stick to a legalist line, that is to say, the application of co-decision procedures up to the last deadline".
