08/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EU Special Representative to the Middle East, Angel Miguel Moratinos, asserted on Monday following a meeting with the Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs Ismail Cem that Turkey and the European Union should further cooperate with regards to the policy towards the region. According to AFP, a Turkish diplomat who wanted to maintain anonymity asserted that Ankara and the EU could "possibly launch a common initiative". Still according to France Press, the diplomat said that Turkey, EU candidate country, is closely interested in Union initiatives in the Middle East. As for Mr Moratinos, he repeated that the Union supports the Jordanian-Egyptian plan aiming to relaunch the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
