ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) defence

The American defence group GENERAL DYNAMICS is to take over its rival NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING for some $2.6 bn ($500 million of which in debts), thereby creating the only American group building both aircraft carriers and nuclear-powered submarines. NEWPORT NEWS saw a profit of $90 million in 2000 for a turnover of some $2 bn and a workforce of 17,000.
