THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/montenegro

26/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - "The election has demostrated that we, Montenegro, have a strengthening front of those forces which advocate the restoration of Montenegrin statehood and the redistribution of our constitutional relationship with Serbia", declared Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic at the end of his meeting with British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, while adding that "the election has also demonstrated that the Montenegrin society remains politically divided and which imposes a particular obligation on the government to continue pursuing cautious and prudent policies". For his part, Robin Cook considered that "It is not for Britain to prescribe what the new relationship should be" between Serbia and Montenegro, "what we do ask is that … it is achieved through the European way," that is to say, "dialogue".
